Welcome to Massis Woodwork & Pipes, where I share my biggest passion, the making of tobacco pipes, alongside my experiences venturing into woodturning, jewelry making and general woodworking.
Pipe Making - A Green Apple
This green stemmed apple pipe is one I made earlier this year. While I don't make many smooth pipes, especially not ones without a contrasting stain, I do occasionally get a request for a straight forward pipe such as this one.
A nice clean grain, although unfortunately there's a small sandpit on the bottom, and a beautiful green stem handmade from resin rod by Chris Kelly from Eldritch Pipes who casts this great material.

Pipe Making - A new mouthpiece
Просмотров 17 тыс.2 года назад
Allthough I generally don't do repairs, when a friend came to me with this classic Ser Jacopop pipe in need of a new stem, I decided to help him out. I took this opportunity to create a bit of a more in depth look at the stem part of the pipemaking process. Satisfying stem fit #Shorts

A sneak preview of the next pipe being made. One of the most satisfying parts in making a pipe is getting that perfect stem fit, sliding in with a bit of friction and closing up without a single lightgap. #Shorts
Pipe Making: A Black & White Bulldog
Просмотров 166 тыс.2 года назад
Several years ago one of my most loyal customers wanted a Bulldog based of a Radice Silk Cut Pure Bulldog, in black & white, with a 9mm filter. So obviously I made him one. Now, another customer was so charmed by this pipe that he wanted an identical one. Due to natural variations in the wood, an exact copy is never a good idea, but this pipe came very close to the original. Pipes like this one...
Pipe Making - A Magnum Liverpool
Просмотров 423 тыс.3 года назад
At the end of 2020, a pipesmoking friend of mine discovered I actually make pipes. As he's a big guy, he wanted me to make him a very large pipe. As luck would have it, I'd been saving a large straight block for this kind of pipe for over 5 years. I went to work, and the end result is this wonderful magnum size Liverpool. Over 270mm long and weighing in at 141 grams, this pipe is by far the lar...
Pipe Making - Sandblasted Rhodesian/Dublin
Просмотров 36 тыс.3 года назад
Over the holidays I've gotten multiple commissions from pipesmokers and collectors around the world who wanted to add one of my handcrafted pipes to their collection. The first one on the list was this small sandblasted Rhodesian, based on a pipe I made back in 2018. Pipe Making - Alaskan Banker
Просмотров 116 тыс.3 года назад
A few years ago I made a pipe for a customer who wanted a mix of a Ukelele, also known as an "Eskimo", and a Banker. We dubbed it the "Alaskan Banker". Recently another customer came around that wanted a similar tobacco pipe, so it was time for this second rendition of the Alaskan Banker. As usual I'm using a nice piece of Spanish Briar. In this case a special Birdseye block I'd been saving for...
Woodturning & Resin Casting - A Lathe Donut
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.3 года назад
Inspired by one of the earlier resin cast hybrid turnings I know, the Hybrid Torus by Heath Knuckles. Watch the original here: ruclips.net/video/rvs2W0Dl6VY/видео.html This piece was the second in a series of Hybrid donuts (What is the plural of Torus? Torii?) all made from the same gigantic piece of Ivy I received from a friend a while back. This one is spoken for, but if all goes well, severa...
Pipe Making - a Reverse Calabash Wasp
Просмотров 34 тыс.3 года назад
One of my most loyal pipe collectors came to me with another request. He had seen a beautiful wasp shaped pipe by Rolando Negoita and wanted a similar pipe, but in a colourscheme matching the previous pipes I have made him: a black sandblast with a faux ivory stem. Join me in my workshop as we turn a large Italian Briar Ebouchon, a section of faux ivory acrylic and a slice of faux ivory polyest...
Woodturning - Hybrid resin rings
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.4 года назад
It had been a while since I made some of these hybrid rings, so when a friend asked me last week if I could make her some, I thought it was the perfect moment to try some of my new mica powders and resin dyes on a few blanks of briar and acacia burl I had in my workshop. Follow along as we move from cast pieces of wood/resin to a set of absolutely stunning hybrid rings. Over the next couple of ...
Woodturning - Blue Petrol chestnut vase
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.4 года назад
After I finished my previous chestnut vase, a friend of mine asked me to make him a similar one with "petrol" coloured resin. Luckily I still had one more log of the same old and dry chestnut to create this hybrid vase. On the last piece I got into a fight with my Crown Mini Revolution hollower (not the first one either) so I finally decided to upgrade and bought a new Simon Hope 10mm carbide c...
Woodturning & 3D printing - Secret Santa Lithopane
Просмотров 8004 года назад
This year (well, 2019 to be precise) I participated in a Secret Santa exchange organised by facebook group "Make in Belgium", hosted by youtuber, maker and stand-up comedian Henk Rijckaert. The concept is simple: make something for your giftee, spending max €15, and receive a gift from someone else. As my giftee was a fan of woodworking, photography and 3D printing, the most appropriate thing I...
Pipe Making - Sandblasted Author
Просмотров 156 тыс.4 года назад
A few weeks ago I was asked by a pipesmoking friend if I could make him a pipe. We went back and forth a bit, decided on a design and colorscheme and I went to work. Follow along as I move from a raw block of 4-year aged Spanish briar and a rod of "Manduela" ebonite (German made by SEM), accented with a small piece of African Blackwood, into a beautiful pipe with a unique mouthpiece. Woodturning - Pile of Poo Pot
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.4 года назад
After supermarkets Lidl & Aldi both organized "stikeez" collectables, I decided to cast a few of them into a block of wood and make a nice moneyjar for our youngest son. Of course his favorite one had to be on top: the "smiling poop" emoji. I learned a few dos and a lot of don'ts on this project, but in the end it all worked out quite well and my son's super happy with it! My woodturning gear: ...

Thanks for the in depth video. What tool is that for staining you have in the bowl
A 'senior' pipe reamer :-)
@@MassisPipes thank you :)
Greetings. sincere compliments for your magnificent pipes! they're really beautiful. but is a normal wood lathe suitable for making them? I'm talking about the home hobby ones. I would like to know if it was possible. A thousand thanks a warm greeting.
A metal lathe makes a lot of things easier and faster, but you can surely do it on a regular wood lathe or even without a lathe altogether!
I don't have a band saw so what I did was make a inverted mount for my jig saw and a vise grip for the trigger and it works just as good, just thought I'd put that out there for people who DIY😉
Nice video and nice pipe too brother! Btw, what kind chuck is that you use for shaping pipe? And where to buy it?
It's a Oneway woodturners chuck with custom jaws. You can get the jaws at VermontFreehand.com
did you make your own jaws or buy em somewhere?
Eu adoraria ter um cachimbo desses pra mim quero fumar e cachimbo pra mim é um item de classe 😊😊😊😊
Гарний бульдожек.
Perfect as always👍
please compare pipes from different brands 🙏 Thanks 🌹
What is the material of the pipe stem?
In this case it's acrylic rod, but usually I use ebonite.
my God. that was perfect. excellent. Please, a kind person will give me a used and used wooden pipe as a gift. 🫠😅I love wooden pipes but they are too expensive and out of my reach.🍃
Hey man, your site is dead. Are you still making pipes?
I'm in the process of moving my site, but due to some private issues it'll all take a bit longer before everything is up & running again. But yes, I do plan to make more pipes & videos in the future :-)
my favorite shape after an oom paul...I prefer the bowl canted back rather than forward.
Where do you get the mouth piece material and what kind of material is it
Nice! Where do I buy these
wonderful, can someone please let me know the type of grinder/sander at 2:27? it has a long rod and plenty of space to work around with the pipe.
It's a basic electric motor with a hook&loop sanding pad screwed into the thread on the axle
thanks so much! I have a grinder, but the shaft on this is nice and long, really nice access. @@MassisPipes
Perfeito!!!
Suas peças são lindas!!!
The Website was deleted 😢
I know, I'm working on something new to replace it:-)
@@MassisPipes do you still make Pipes ?
It's been a rough year, and this one is going to be worse but yes , I still want to make more pipes :-)
Beautiful
Love the color choice, The pipe is a work of art!#
What's material the stem made of?
Black Ebonite rod from SEM Germany :-)
how about polyacetal pom rod, can it?
@@ricat1259 pom is self lubricating and useful for the tenon. It's not a good option for a stem since it doesn't polish as well, is less comfortable on the teeth and you cannot bend it into a shape. It could technically work for a straight stem but I'd advise against it.
Thank you for the explanation, because in my country Indonesia it is very difficult to find stem material like the one you mentioned
SEM Germany ships worldwide, so you can order from them directly :-)
Very cool video and informative as well. I just don't understand why they don't end these videos by showing someone smoking out of it. That would add closure
Most of my pipes are sent off to customers around the world so I haven't even personally seen them being used :-)
Lovely pipe, lovely craftsmanship.
Looking for info on that second "speed" chuck with the extensions for the briar? did you make that? what is it called?
It's a wood turning chuck by One-way, with jaws you can buy from Vermont freehand :-)
Thanks, trying to price out everything I need - Found a really nice restored metal lathe and don't want to get ahead of myself.@@MassisPipes
So charming with that green stem 😍
What did you do to refreshing the disc sander while working?
Hi What's this that you applied on the tenon?
Another time I saw this video, it was amazing 👏 😍 I want to become a former.
Please wear a mask when woodworking.
Peça perfeita!!!
I've never tried using my gouges and chisels as scrapers. It works pretty well and you can't get the edge caught. A bit more sanding, I would think. Very pretty pipe
Be careful as you can most definitely get the edge caught. Metal lathes aren't really supposed to be used like this, but I do find it works fairly well.
Can you tell me where I can get the stem material "Manduela" ebonite, in the same colors as you show? The pipe is striking with that stem and I am a lathe turner and would love to give it a try on my pipe building venture.
It's made by SEM Germany, you can buy from them directly.
Where did you get those chuck jaws? I need them to adapt to my wood lathe chuck?
Steve norse at Vermont Freehand sells them :-)
👍
Привет. Используемый эбонит чьего производства?
SEM Germany
@@MassisPipes вы выписываете его из Германии или сами проживаете в Германии.? Если выписываете то с какого сайта
I live in Belgium, but order straight from the Factory of SEM ebonite-arts.de
İzlerken keyif aldım, Elinize sağlık.
👍
What's the name of that 2 jaw chuck you're using?
It's a Oneway chuck with tower jaws from Vermont Freehand.
What kind of sandblast media did you use?
Hi. Do you remember what kind of material you used for the stem?
La boquilla es de teflon
Actually the tenon is integral to the stem which in this case made from acrylic if I remember correctly.
Posso chiederti dove prendi il materiale per i bocchini?
It's ebonite rod, made by SEM Germany :-)
Muito bom parabéns
Hello. I really enjoyed watching this video. It was the most beautiful pipe I saw, especially with that green stem. I would really like to learn how to make a pipe, of course, with minimal tools, but I have never worked with wood before and I have no idea how to do it without a lathe.
A stubby , chunky spliff pipe !!!
I enjoyed your video I'm starting to make my own for my son Im having trouble getting the cutting dremmer wheel that small can you tell me where you purchased your please
EU GOSTO DESSE TIPO CLÁSSICO SLIM RETO E SIMPLES 👍🤩
can anyone tell me where I can buy jaws like that or if these are home made?
Vermont Freehand sells these :-)
Great..! Bowl size its ???
Is a 👍 One question, you are using metal compound polish?????
I'm using what's generally known as tripoli and white diamond paste
@@MassisPipes ohh great thanks for your soon answer Great job men
